2010 Smallwood Marlins Newsletter

Week of 12 July 2010

What an exciting meet we had on Saturday against Fort Washington, our second win! The final score was SVA 305.5 and FW 269.5.  Thanks for hanging in there despite all of the rain.  All of our swimmers continued to swim hard and improve their times.  Congratulations to our Triple winner: Darius McKenzie and our 5 Double winners: Ethan Chung, Tyler Manion, Luke Morrissey, Derek Peltzer, and Tyler Perrie.  Thanks again to every parent/guardian who helped work the meet.  The GUPPY meet on Sunday morning was a huge success.  A good time was had by all the 10/U swimmers and their parents who participated in the meet.  We had well over 150 swimmers from 8 teams that competed.  Many of our Smallwood swimmers walked away with a handful of ribbons.  Great job GUPPIES.

This Saturday, July 17, is our fifth and final meet of the season against Roger Carter (RCS) at our pool.  Smallwood swimmers should be at the pool between 7:10am and 7:20am for check-in. SVAC warm-ups will begin at 7:25am and end at 7:45am.  The meet will begin promptly at 8:15am.   We need all setup volunteers at the pool no later than 6:15am ready to work in order to be fully set up and ready for warm-ups at 7:25am.   Jr. Marlins parents please have your swimmers at the pool by 10:40am.  Jr. Marlins should swim somewhere between 10:50am and 12:00pm.

Parent Meet and Snack Bar Volunteers:  Please check the volunteer list on the swim team board and fill in those vacant positions.  We ask that all set-up volunteers arrive at the pool by 6:15am.  All meet volunteers and officials are required to sign in at the officials table before 8:00 am.

Reminder: You must check off the PRESENT/ABSENT box next to your name in the list on the coaches swim team cart by the end of practice on the Wednesday before the meet or e-mail Coach Debbie (debaroth@aol.com) that you will not be swimming at Saturday's meet.  It is expected that every swimmer will be there unless otherwise indicated in writing.

Upcoming Swim-a-thon Fund Raising Event this Wednesday, July 14th: We will be holding the swim-a-thon fundraiser during our regular practice times on Wednesday, July 14th.  Parents and swimmers, please use your swim-a-thon sponsor sheet that was handed out last week to get your pledges and raise funds for the team.  If you have misplaced your form, it was attached to last week's newsletter e-mail.

IMPORTANT: Charles County Championship Meet at Bannister, Sunday July 18th from 7:00 am – 1:00 pm.   Parents and swimmers, we will post the seeding for this meet on the swim team board as soon as we have it available.  Smallwood swimmers will warm up from 7:30-7:45am in lanes 4,5, and 6 so please arrive and check-in between 7:15 and 7:25am.  The meet will start at 8:30am.  Parents will need to bring chairs and an additional 2-3 tents for shade.

IMPORTANT:  Divisional Championship meet on Saturday, July 24th at Indian Head:  The Divisional Championship meet is fast approaching.  The seeding meeting is Sunday, July 18th.  There is a sign-up sheet (present/absent list) on the cart. Please check off whether you will be able to participate in the Divisional meet by the end of practice on Friday, July 16th.  This is a special meet for the team.  We are limited in the number of swimmers we can enter in each event so we want to enter swimmers that we know for certain will be able to attend the meet.

Upcoming Events: Swim Team Awards Party and Board Of Directors (BOD) Elections:  The annual awards party and 2011 Board of Directors elections will be held at the pool on Saturday, July 24th starting at 6:00pm.  A nominations sheet for positions on the Board will be posted on the swim team board later this week.  Please help us fill all the positions on the Board next year.  The Board needs your help to provide a positive experience for all the swimmers on the team.  Remember, we are all volunteers and the team is for the benefit of the swimmers.

Claire's Desserts Fund Raising Event: All orders will be ready for pick up this Wed., July 14th at the pool during practices.  Thank you for participating!

COACHES CORNER!!  News and Views from our SVAC coaches Debbie and Lindsay

“Welcome to the 2010 Summer season to all the returning swimmers and especially to those brand new Smallwood Marlins!  I am so excited for this season to begin since Coach Lindsay and I will already know many of you and your abilities from last Summer. We can start right off with swimming very, very fast!  Both Coach Lindsay and I want you to come every day to practice, making sure you are ready to work hard and give 100% effort.  These two elements will help Smallwood marlins be successful.

Swimming Fast is Fun!!!” – Coach Debbie

Thank you,
